I didn't keep a record of this for the blog, but luckily I did at least journal it. I'm not totally hopeless. Here's the journal entry:
So, I was scheduled to be induced on May 12th,
but my due date wasn’t actually until the 17th, which means the Dr.
wouldn’t induce me unless I was thinning and dilating all on my own. I was so paranoid it wouldn’t happen! I went to the doctor the week before and was
still at zero for both. I seriously started
trying everything ~ sex, walks around the block, bouncing on an exercise ball
for hours. You name it, I’d try it. Ha!
And let me just say… not one of those things were super fun at 9 months
pregnant. Hahaha! J
So, I was supposed to have an appointment on May 10th, so the night
before, I finally realized there was not much else I could do, and that I best just
deal with the fact that I may not get induced.
I decided to have a bubble bath and go to bed. It was super relaxing and I had a good night.
At about 12:30am, I woke up thinking I had to go to the
bathroom. Which very quickly switched
the realization that my water was breaking (no one has that much pee). Ha!
So, after I emptied myself, I woke up Steven and we started texting some
people in our ward. Luckily, my friend
Amanda Cox woke up when I called and she came down and slept on our futon and took
care of the kids. Yay! I’m so grateful for her being willing to do
that! My mom wasn’t scheduled to come
until Wednesday night.
We headed to the hospital and I started getting minor
contractions. Nothing too intense. When I got there, they said Dr. Terry wasn’t
coming on until 7am, so I didn’t really want to have the baby before he got
there. I opted to not start the Pitocin
or epidural quite yet. I held off on the
epidural until about 4:30am, at which point, I was dilated to about a 4 and was
starting to shake from the intensity of the contractions. I didn’t like the shaking… the nurse said it
was just hormones, but it scared me and reminded me of how I felt after Noah
was born. But once the epidural was in,
I felt fine again. It was actually a
perfect epidural, because I could still move my toes/legs a bit and could feel
just enough pressure, but couldn’t feel the contractions.
At about 5:30am, I was a 4+ and I didn’t want to be there all day, so I opted
for the Pitocin. That apparently worked
very quickly, because at shift change, the new nurse came in to introduce
herself and I asked the two nurses if I could get checked (it had been a while)
and said that I could feel pressure.
Well, sure enough – she checked me and I was at an 8. Yay!
(Dr. Terry came in about then too, just to say hello and said we’d have this
baby by lunchtime. When he said that, I
thought it may be sooner. ;) It sure was!)
So, the nurse told me I was ready and that they’d prep me for delivery. Dr. Terry came back in and I did one
push. I totally didn’t do it right and
nothing happened. Ha! I had to be reminded of how to push. So on the next contraction, I got it right
and little Cameron’s head popped out. It
was weird, ‘cuz Steven said, “His head is out,” and I started crying and said,
“I know.” I could totally feel it. Weird.
On the next contraction, Dr. Terry cut me just a tiny bit because
Cameron’s heart pressure dropped, but he came out on that push! SO EASY!
Seriously, I could have a hundred kids if all I had to do was
labor. J So, Cameron was born at 7:47am, right after
Dr. Terry got there and shift change occurred.
So fun. He was totally healthy
and Dr. Terry knew right away he was a big baby. He told me it was my personal best, but I
didn’t even believe him, because it seemed too easy for a 9lb baby, but sure
enough!
Steven, who was seriously lacking in sleep, was about to cut the cord and had a
few of his little seizure twitches. I got nervous and told him to go lay
down! He eventually did, which was
good. He really was close to passing out
on that one.
After they cleaned Cameron up, I just got to hold him for a
long time. Steven went home to get the
kids (we weren’t sure how long Amanda wanted to be in charge of them), and they
took me up to recovery. It was lovely.
Noah and Roxi came to meet their brother and loved him from
the very beginning. Especially
Noah. Roxi held him for a bit and liked
to pat his head and say “hello baby boy.”
Noah wanted to hold him the whole time though. He was so excited… still is! It’s adorable to watch him. At this point, we still didn’t have a name,
although we were pretty set on Cameron.
(We have known David would be the middle name for a long time). Once Noah got there though, we asked him if
baby’s name should be Cameron David and he said yes. That sealed the deal. The kids have always said his name should be
Spiderman Bobby, so I asked Noah if that should still be his name and he very
matter of factly said, “No Mom. His name
is Cameron David.” So there it was. No more questioning. J
